Former NFL Stars challenge Wounded Warriors in “A Tribute to Heroes, A Game of Honor”

WW footballThe Wounded Warrior Amputee Football Team (WWAFT) will challenge former players of the National Football League in “A Tribute to Heroes, Game of Honor” flag football game Wednesday, Sept. 10 at Toyota Field.

The WWAFT is composed of more than 25 men and women who served in the United States military and who suffered the loss of a limb in the conflicts in Iraq or Afghanistan. The team’s record is 8-0 versus the former players of the NFL, having defeated NFL alumni team most recently in Philadelphia and in Tampa, Atlanta, Washington, DC, and Green Bay and at the last three Super Bowls.

More than 25 NFL alumni, led by Dallas Cowboy Hall-of-Famer Randy White, Houston Oiler great Dan Pastorini & Heisman Trophy winner Ricky Williams, will take on these amputee heroes. The mission statement for the team is simply to demonstrate that “the loss of a limb doesn’t mean the end of an athletic career or an active life”

“Many of us with the WWAFT were cared for here in San Antonio – at Brooke Army Medical Center and at the Center For The Intrepid – and it is a privilege for all of us amputee veterans to be able to ‘return home’ to share in this evening with San Antonio,” said BJ Ganem, USMC and WWAFT co-captain. “We want to show our appreciation to this community for all that you have done for us and to show the nation that with your help and care, amputee veterans can accomplish anything – including whupping up on these NFL alumni.”

Additionally, the tribute on 9/10 is intended to recognize all those who enlisted after 9/11, 2001, who knowingly put themselves in harm’s way to defend this nation and to also honor the sacrifice of all of the men and women of our Armed Forces, particularly all of San Antonio’s Gold Star families. The WWAFT is also proud to be able to support and bring out as their guests, all of San Antonio’s special-needs children and adults in a partnership with Morgan’s Wonderland, Gordon Hartman and the San Antonio Scorpions.

Gates at Toyota Field will open at 6 p.m. on Sept. 10. Tickets are $10/Adults, $5/Students and all members of the military (active, reserve & retired) and special needs families of San Antonio will be admitted at no charge, courtesy of Humana.

Humana green logo“Humana has made a $100,000 donation to the Wounded Warrior Amputee Football Team as a symbol of our support to all servicemen and servicewomen who make a timeless sacrifice for our nation’s freedom,” said Orie Mullen, president of Humana Military. “Our sponsorship of this game solidifies all that Humana does for veterans, from hiring more than 1,700 veterans and military spouses as part of our National Veterans Hiring Initiative to providing health benefits to 3 million active duty service members, retirees, and their families in TRICARE’s South Region.”

SAMCo_logoIn an effort to keep up with the San Antonio region’s growing congestion and transportation funding challenges, the San Antonio Mobility Coalition would like you to consider voting in favor of Proposition 1. The Texas general election ballot takes place on November 4, 2014.

What is Prop. 1

Proposition 1 would authorize annual disbursements from the State’s oil and gas production tax collections to the State Highway Fund. An estimated $1.4 billion would be transferred into the State Highway Fund in the first year alone, as a first step in addressing a projected $4 billion annual funding shortfall for TxDOT.

Security Service Federal Credit Union introduces Life Balance program for employees and their families

Security Services Federal Credit UnionWhen employees feel their workplace has a strong culture of health, they tend to be happier, less stressed and more likely to take positive steps to improve their well-being, according to a recent study by Aon Hewitt, the National Business Group on Health and The Futures Company. Now, imagine the benefit if that perception were expanded to their families. That’s what San Antonio-based Security Service Federal Credit Union (SSFCU) is counting on with the revamping of its award-winning health and wellness program.

In the new SSFCU Total Wellbeing program, more than 1,700 SSFCU employees and their families are eligible to participate in an individualized, comprehensive life balance program at no cost…one that takes into account their physical, financial and emotional health. Benefits include tools, resources and rewards to help them achieve their physical goals; reduced rates and fees on select financial products; confidential advising for help navigating personal challenges; concierge services and legal and financial help. Everything is accessible from one, easy to use online platform and the program is being marketed extensively to employees.

“At Security Service, we are deeply committed to having happy, healthy employees…and that includes having a good life-work balance and strong financial footing,” says Jim Laffoon, president and chief executive officer for SSFCU.  “I am

thrilled that we are embarking on this initiative that is laying the foundation for a healthier work environment. We are making significant investments providing meaningful and relevant products and services for our employees and their families.”

And it’s working. More people are taking part in the benefits than ever before.

“One of the most popular features of our new program is our support of involvement in community health and fitness events,” says Tom Martin, senior vice president for SSFCU. “We encourage and pay for employee participation in local, community events.

In San Antonio, for example, we sponsored an astounding 223 employees and their families in the Blacklight Run,” he adds. “There’s literally something for everyone –from zombie runs to boat races.”

Studies show that employers like SSFCU are beginning to take longer-term and more holistic approaches to their benefits programs, according to the Wills Health Care Reform Survey for 2014. Almost one-third of companies interviewed were planning to expand wellness programs, with another 29 percent planning to do so in the future.

Local Child Protective Services kids get school supply boost from KENS 5, Generations Federal Credit Union and Corner Store

generations fcu logokens5com-logo-310Generations Federal Credit Union and Corner Store will partner with CBS affiliate KENS 5 to collect school supplies for the approximately 7,000 Bexar County children who are under the care of Child Protective Services.

Individuals are encouraged to participate by bringing supplies to the KENS 5 studios during the week of August 4 through August 8, donating online at http://info.mygenfcu.org/bills-elves or dropping off supplies at any of the 14 Generations Federal Credit Union branches between July 23 and August 9.  The school supplies will be delivered to the CPS offices during the week of August 11 and case workers will distribute the collected supplies to the children.  Individuals who donate will receive a coupon for a free Kolache and a cup of Cibolo Mountain premium coffee from Corner Store.

“This school supply drive is a win-win for everyone involved.  It enables Generations to make a tangible difference in our community and it provides these students with the supplies they need to be successful during the school year.  Additionally, the families who take in these children receive little to no financial assistance from the State, so it provides us with the opportunity to help them out as they step up to the plate to help these kids,” said Generations FCU CEO, Steve Schipull.

Hosted by KENS 5 Chief Meteorologist, Bill Taylor, the bi-annual event collects school supplies in August and Christmas toys in December.  The KENS 5 studios are located at 5400 Fredericksburg Road and volunteers will be out in front of the studios at the 4, 5 and 6 p.m. newscasts during the week of August 4 through August 8.

“San Antonio has always been a community that comes together to take care of our own.  The Bill’s Elves initiative has been very successful year after year and we look forward to exceeding our goals and making a difference in the lives of these great kids,” concluded Schipull.
