Security Service FCU named San Antonio’s Healthiest Employer

Security Services Federal Credit UnionSecurity Service Federal Credit Union (SSFCU) has been named the healthiest employer in San Antonio by the San Antonio Business Journal. The credit union topped the list for large employers in the annual survey that showcases those employers who proactively shape the health and wellness of their employees.

This year’s awards event took place at the Historic Pearl Development in downtown San Antonio and included a one-mile fitness walk and a health fair.

“We believe when employees feel their workplace has a strong culture of health, they are happier, less stressed and more likely to improve their well-being,” says Jim Laffoon president and chief executive officer of SSFCU. “That benefits them, their families, the workplace and our members.”

Conceived and promoted by Laffoon to help employees and their families achieve a good life-work balance and strong financial footing, the credit union earlier this year rolled out its Total Wellbeing program to its more than 1,700 employees. It offers employees and their families an individualized comprehensive life balance program at no cost that takes into account their physical, emotional and financial health.  Benefits include tools, resources and rewards to help them achieve their physical goals; reduced rates and fees on select financial products; confidential advising for help navigating personal challenges; concierge services and legal and financial help.

In cities where SSFCU branches are located, employees are encouraged to participate in local community events, like the Blacklight Run in San Antonio, Dragon Boat Races in Denver and Iron Will Games in Salt Lake City. “We pay for our employees to participate in these events, many of which are fundraisers for nonprofits…it’s a win-win all the way around,” adds Laffoon.

The credit union also received accolades for it’s wellness program in Denver, coming in second place in the 2014 Metro Denver Healthiest Employers category for small companies. It is the third year the credit union has made the top five.

Phyllis Browning Company agent Tiffany Stevens featured in REALTOR® Mag

Tiffany StevensTiffany Stevens, REALTOR® with Phyllis Browning Company, was recently featured in REALTOR®Mag, the official magazine of the National Association of REALTORS®.  In the publication’s article “Going it Alone” spotlighting single homebuyers, Stevens explained why the relationship between real estate professionals and their single clients can be especially strong: “Buying and selling real estate and moving is already a highly emotional process. If you’re doing it alone, it can be scary and stressful.  I keep that in mind when working with my single clientele, so that they never feel like they are completely alone in the process.”

Nearly a quarter of the country’s homeowners go through the house-hunting and -selling process alone.  With a lifestyle including frequent job and status changes, members of this segment are likely to encounter more frequent real estate needs throughout their lifetime—thus proving to be an important client base to REALTORS®, especially those who can connect to them on a personal level early in their homeowning phase.

Stevens also shared a key tip for reaching this demographic: a regular presence on Facebook, including her popular Friday local events posts.  Realizing that singles are likely social and looking to meet others, these particular posts make current and potential clients in this demographic feel she’s “more connected and really know[s] the community.”

Phyllis Browning_colorFor more than 25 years, Phyllis Browning Company has served buyers and sellers of high-quality real estate in the greater San Antonio area, the Hill Country, and throughout South Texas.  A key component of this dedication includes serving as a source of knowledge and information, whether specific to ranches, luxury high-rise condominiums, historic gems, or Hill Country properties—or to the market as a whole.  Stevens’s approach also aligns with the company’s belief in forming genuine relationships with clients and building on those over the years.  Phyllis Browning Company continues their commitment to being The Very Best in service, ethics, technology, information, and community.  Find a REALTOR® and view current listings at www.phyllisbrowning.com.

Hyatt Regency Hill Country Resort and Spa celebrates Oktoberfest

Hyatt Hill Country_gretyWhen you call the Texas Hill Country home and you happen to be the only resort in Texas that features a FlowRider® machine creating perfect waves every day of the year,  what better way to celebrate October than with terrific brews, fabulous German food and  tasty waves? Hyatt Regency Hill Country Resort and Spa is throwing an Oktoberfest like no other, so come say hello to fall and make a splash during the hotel’s festive, fun-filled evening of craft beers, dancing, all of your favorite German foods and enjoy the hotel’s famous five-acres of water fun while you’re at it on Saturday, October 4, 4 p.m. – 8 p.m.

Held on the resort grounds, Hyatt Regency Hill Country Resort’s Oktoberfest will fill its Luckenbach Pavilion with live music from the 2 Rivers Brass Quintet, a terrific selection of the best brews sure to put the “fest” in your October and authentic German cuisine that will make you feel as if you’re enjoying a meal in Germany itself.

Terry Vine PhotographyTickets for the event are $18 for adults and $12 for children ages 6-12, while children 5 and under are free. The admission price includes food, entertainment, one drink ticket and parking. A cash bar will be available to purchase beer, wine, cocktails and other non-alcoholic beverages for additional purchase after the use of the one drink ticket. So where does the splash come in? Tickets for the event also include access to the resort’s pools and waterpark from noon – 8 p.m. on the day of the event, making sure that you can wet both your whistle and your bathing suit during this special Oktoberfest. Tickets may be purchased by calling the resort at 210-767-7999.

130827_hyatt_cf&b-10Brews featured during the festivities include Texas Craft Beers and German Oktoberfest and Fall beers such as St. Arnold’s Octoberfest, Karbach Krunkin Pumpkin, Hacker Pschorr Marzen Amber Ocktoberfest, Erdinger Hefe Weissbier Dark, Hofbrau Maibock, and Paulaner Oktoberfest among others. There may even be a few surprises to tempt your beer taste buds—like growlers for sale—and a full bar with other beers, wines, cocktails, and non-alcoholic beverages will also be available to quench the thirst you work up while demonstrating your best German polka.

A true Texas resort that celebrates its heritage whenever possible, Hyatt Regency Hill Country Resort features Texas beers throughout the property—in fact, the draft lines in Charlie’s Long Bar consist of only Texas draft beers, so if you’d like to check out the selection while you’re enjoying Oktoberfest, feel free to pull up a bar stool and enjoy some Texas brews.

Happy Couple sitting in Beer gardenThere’s nothing like a fantastic German feast to accompany your beer and Hyatt Regency Hill Country Resort’s delicious food stations definitely fill the bill. With traditional German favorites such as Slow Cooked Sauerbraten and Egg Noodles, Shiner Bock Bratwursts, Braised Red Cabbage, Roasted Chicken with Beer and Onion Sauce, Warm Potato Salad, Pumpernickel Bread, Pretzel Rolls, Molasses and Honey Pfeffernuesse cookies, German Chocolate cake and much more, you’re sure to feel like you’ve stepped into a German brewhouse for a meal.

Nestled in the beauty of the Texas Hill Country, Hyatt Regency Hill Country Resort is the perfect spot to celebrate Oktoberfest. The Hill Country features a rich German heritage, with language, foods and celebrations that have distinct German roots, giving the area a fun German feel. But it’s not just the Hill Country that features such natural ties to the motherland of beer—did you know that German was once the official language of the government of the City of San Antonio? That’s right—city council meeting minutes and other city documents used to be written in German, making it your official duty to mark Oktoberfest and raise a glass to the area’s German heritage! (By the way, “Prosit!” is a traditional German toast, so be sure to say that when you’re enjoying Oktoberfest.)

Terry Vine PhotographyJump In, The Water is Fine:  Five Acres of Water Fun Welcomes Oktober
Only in Texas can you enjoy Oktoberfest and a river ride at the same time, so bring your suits and jump in a tube to float in the resort’s Ramblin’ River®, or hang ten on the FlowRider® wave machine. Access to the resort’s full water park is included with admission to Oktoberfest. To ride the FlowRider®, there is an additional fee per hour of use.

Long known for its ever-popular water playground featuring three swimming pools, cascading water falls, a sandy beach, the Ramblin’ River® and more, Hyatt Regency Hill Country Resort’s new FlowRider® wave machine turns up the fun meter for anyone who enjoys riding the waves. The exciting attraction simulates a “barrel-less” wave, complete with a sloped wave surface featuring 40,000 gallons of water being driven up at a rate of about 18,000 gallons per minute. What does that mean?  Perfect waves, all year long, ready for guests to flowboard their day away.

Flowboarding resembles surfing, but is a combination of skateboarding, wakeboarding, boogie boarding, snowboarding and surfing—a fantastic mix of fun for any board sport fan. The wave machine spans an impressive length of 54 feet and is 22 feet wide, with a water depth of between 3 to 4 inches, perfect for bodyboarding, kneeboarding or stand-up boarding. The FlowRider® is heated seasonally, meaning guests are able to enjoy this adrenaline-packed thrill all year long, though guests must be at least 42 inches tall to boogie board and 52 inches tall to stand-up ride/surf.

In addition to the wave machine, the resort recently added a 22-foot-tall tower waterslide to its already amazing water park which now offers five acres of hydrated fun and relaxation. Perfect for guests more than 42 inches tall, the slide is a great complement to the water park’s 950-foot Ramblin’ River® and sandy beach. The park also features an activity pool equipped with water volleyball and basketball, an adults-only Texas-shaped pool, 2 hot tubs and a zero-entry kiddie wading pool, ensuring wet fun for everyone, no matter what their height. And the pools are all heated, making them a great spot year-round.

Terry Vine PhotographyMake it a Getaway!
If you’d like to turn your Oktoberfest into a fall getaway, Hyatt Regency Hill Country Resort has a special rate to help your fest last all weekend. With special Oktoberfest weekend rates starting from $189 for Friday, October 3 and Saturday, October 4, it’s easy to relax and recharge while enjoying Oktoberfest and water fun, an afternoon on the links at the Hill Country Golf Club or a relaxing massage at Windflower-The Hill Country Spa. The resort’s traditional Hill Country architecture complements the site’s inherent beauty, highlighted by thousands of native Live Oak trees, limestone-banked creeks, mossy springs and rolling wildflower meadows, making Hyatt Regency Hill Country Resort and Spa an ideal location for a fun-filled weekend or relaxing family vacations year-round.

Located just 16 miles northwest of downtown San Antonio and the San Antonio International Airport, Hyatt Regency Hill Country Resort and Spa offers a retreat that feels a world away, but the convenience and fun of San Antonio is just outside your door. San Antonio Water System Federal Credit Union votes to merge with Generations FCU

180x150-generationsThe Boards of Directors of San Antonio Water System Federal Credit Union (SAWS FCU) and Generations Federal Credit Union (Generations FCU) have announced their intent to merge.  The merger was approved by SAWS FCU members at a special meeting on Tuesday, September 9, 2014 and had previously been approved by the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA).

“When we began to consider a merger, we knew we wanted to provide our members access to the same services they would expect from the larger banks and credit unions, but at the same time, we wanted them to retain the personalized and detailed service they have come to expect from our credit union,” said Veronica Godley, Board Chair of SAWS FCU.  “Generations is the perfect combination of both.  After meeting with their senior team and discussing philosophies, we know they share the same dedication to community and the membership that we’ve held for 56 years.”

SAWS FCU was founded in 1958 to serve employees of San Antonio Water System.  Since that time it has grown to a credit union with $2.7 million in assets and nearly 1,100 members.  The credit union is currently headquartered at the SAWS Building located at 2800 U.S. Highway 281 in San Antonio.

Generations FCU was founded in 1940 and has more than $500 million in assets, 48,000 members and 14 branches across the community.  In addition to an expanded portfolio of both consumer and small business products, SAWS FCU members will have access to 55,000 surcharge-free ATMs nationwide, 5,000 shared branching locations, deposit by phone and the ability to access their accounts through mobile device or computer.  The merger is expected to be complete as of Tuesday, September 30, 2014.

“We are honored by the faith that SAWS FCU has placed in us through this merger and look forward to welcoming them as Generations members.  For nearly 75 years, our credit union has been a trusted advisor to our members and to our community, providing them with the tools they need to be financially successful. We look forward to bringing that same level of expectation and dedication to our newest members,” said Steve Schipull, President and CEO of Generations FCU.
