San Antonio’s largest food drive collects frozen turkeys at the annual Turkey Round-Up

Security Service Federal Credit Union (FCU) has partnered with the San Antonio Food Bank for the 10th consecutive year to host the annual Holiday Turkey Round-Up.  The one-day, 12-hour event is held during the Food 4 SA Campaign and collects Thanksgiving turkeys to put on the plates of hungry families across Southwest Texas. Security Service volunteers will collect frozen turkeys, canned goods and cash for the San Antonio Food Bank on Saturday, November 17 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at two Security Service FCU locations:  1604/Bandera (9253 N. Loop 1604 W) and De Zavala (12707 IH-10 W).

“San Antonio is an incredibly giving city and we’re looking to make this year’s campaign the most successful yet,” said David Reynolds, president and chief executive officer for Security Service FCU.  “With just a $10 donation, the Food Bank can buy a turkey for a family in need this Thanksgiving.  Anything you can give will help make a difference.”

During the month of November, individuals can drop off nonperishable food and monetary donations at any one of the 26 Security Service FCU service centers in San Antonio, Boerne, Pleasanton, Castroville, Schertz and New Braunfels. The goal of this year’s campaign is to collect one million pounds of food.

The City of San Antonio will host the NetWORKS IT event October 24

The City of San Antonio will host the NetWORKS IT event this October to develop local small/ minority/ woman-owned business enterprises (S/M/WBEs) engaged in the Information Technology (IT) industry. This event will take place from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 24, at Geekdom, 112 E. Pecan Street, San Antonio, Texas.

NetWORKS will bridge the gap between S/M/WBEs in IT and established technology firms and buyers. Specifically, we seek to foster the development of our local IT Firms by providing instruction and resources on how to become certified and authorized dealers, licensed vendors, distributors, and/or service providers of name brand high end technologies.

In addition, we plan to help our local businesses connect with large IT companies and manufacturers to bridge the gap between the products/services offered, and those emerging in the industry. This will be accomplished through informational seminars as well as break-out sessions with purchasing agencies and private companies detailing the specifics on how to do business with them.

Given that the Department of Information Resources’ (DIR) Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Cooperative Contracts pose a significant opportunity for our local S/M/WBEs, we will also include a seminar detailing how to participate as a vendor on DIR Cooperative Contracts.

Availability is limited, so register today – time slots with CISCO, Hewlett Packard (HP), Hitachi, and IBM representatives will be allocated on a first come first serve basis.

October 2012 Word from the Chairman

A friend of mine related a story about how he built his business. He was a successful engineer working as a partner in a firm in the corporate world; however, his dream was to be an entrepreneur. He followed his dream, resigned his position and bought into a partnership in a commercial janitorial business.

He sacrificed and gave all he had to make this small business a success. After three months, his dream turned into a late night of scrubbing toilets and wondering whether he had made the right decision.

His business partner observed him and said, “I know what you are thinking. You want to quit!” He continued, “You are wondering if you can get your old position back and how you can recoup your investment.”

My friend said, “That is exactly what I am thinking!”

The partner said, “I know that because I have been there. But tomorrow you need to get up and go sell.” He said, “You need to keep selling even if you don’t know how you are going to cover the contracts.”

The next morning my friend got up, put on his suit and began to sell. He never looked back and built his business into a multimillion dollar company.

Your story may be different than my friend, but the same in that we all could use perspective on how we are growing our business and career. Take the time to ask yourself, “Is what I’m doing going to grow my business?” As 2012 comes to a close and we wrap up another year, take a moment to identify what it will take for you and your business to grow to the next level in 2013. Are you heading in the right direction and doing those things everyday?

Dahill Sponsors Marketing & Promotions Leadership Lab Session

Baby, its’ “chili” outside – at least for the participants of the North Chamber 2012 Leadership Lab “best class, ever.” It was a slightly chili day, Wednesday, October 10, when Lab participants gathered at Rio Cibolo Ranch for team building, entertainment and a good old fashioned chili cook off. The event soon concludes a nine-month award winning leadership series focusing on self-discovery, inspiration and success.

Criteria for the Chili Challenge involved the teams’ ability to study the elements of the product’s marketing mix, strategy, pricing, advertising and promotion using case studies. The end resulting in discovering personal branding and capitalizing on using the brand created to increase the circle of influence.

Judges for the competition included Leadership Lab alumni and supporters Maria Barrett of Padgett, Stratemann & Company; Marty Williams, Westin La Cantera; and Darryl Cook, Preferred Landscape and Design.

Metropolitan Methodist Hospital Announces Major Expansion

Officials of Metropolitan Methodist Hospital, a campus of Methodist Hospital, announced  plans for a $50 million expansion at a “skybreaking” ceremony.

San Antonio City Councilman Diego Bernal joined Greg Seiler, hospital chief executive officer, in ceremonies that included a traditional groundbreaking and a skybreaking with officials using sledgehammers to begin construction where the new structure will be connected to the existing building.

The Methodist expansion includes an 85,000-square-foot, seven story patient tower, which will house an intensive care unit (ICU) that can accommodate 48 ICU beds and that will house additional diagnostic and perioperative areas and a state-of-the art gastrointestinal lab.  These efforts are part of a continued investment by Methodist Healthcare to meet the needs of the growing center city population.

The expansion is expected to be completed by early 2014.  Earl Swensson Associates is project architecture with Skanska as project construction company.

“From the inception of the partnership between Methodist Healthcare Ministries and HCA, Methodist Healthcare has been dedicated and committed to meeting the health care needs of downtown San Antonio.  The Metropolitan Methodist Hospital campus has evolved and expanded over the years with the addition of a free-standing women’s pavilion, a major emergency department renovation, two additional medical office buildings and now a major expansion that includes the building of an ICU tower, housing much needed critical care beds.  Over the past six years, we have invested more than $105 million into Metropolitan Methodist Hospital and we envision more growth in the near future as the footprint of our center city expands,” said Seiler.

Metropolitan Methodist Hospital invested $50 million just six years ago with the addition of the Women’s Pavilion and an expanded emergency department, to better service the growing number of babies being delivered and the increased traffic in the emergency room.  In June Metropolitan Methodist Gateway opened, a three-story 35,500 square foot medical office building which has expanded the hospital campus footprint to Interstate 35.

Hospital administrators and board members are now considering the implications of the recent Christus Santa Rosa announcement to stop offering adult services at its downtown facility and how it may extend growth plans for Metropolitan Methodist Hospital.

Metropolitan Methodist Hospital, a campus of Methodist Hospital, is a 330-bed hospital that provides a complete range of health care services to residents of downtown San Antonio and the surrounding area, including Alamo Heights, Terrell Hills and Olmos Park.  The facility is accredited by the Joint Commission in stroke care and is designated as an accredited Chest Pain Center.  It is the only hospital in San Antonio with a Breast Center that staffs a certified breast patient navigator by the National Consortium of Breast Centers.   The hospital campus includes a free standing women’s pavilion, the only free standing facility in downtown San Antonio completely dedicated to the health of women and their newborn babies.   The hospital just expanded its campus by adding the new Metropolitan Methodist Gateway medical office building and is will break ground soon on a $50 million expansion,  to include a multi-story critical care tower and operating rooms.
