NORTH SAN ANTONIO CHAMBER COALITION RECOMMENDATION TO RESCIND LABOR PEACE AGREEMENT REQUIREMENT ADOPTED BY CITY COUNCIL

SAN ANTONIO, TX – A recommendation by the North San Antonio Chamber to rescind the Labor Peace Agreement (LPA) portion of The Food, Beverage, and Retail Prime Concessionaire (RFP 18-014) for San Antonio International Airport (SAT) was adopted by Mayor Ron Nirenberg on Wednesday following City Council B Session.

The direction to issue the RFP with this LPA clause was done without public input or a full understanding of the increased costs it would create for local food service businesses to compete for the contract.

“We appreciate the willingness of the Mayor Nirenberg and City Council to listen to the business community’s concerns and acknowledge stakeholder input is vital to good city governance”, said Cristina Aldrete, Executive Vice President of the North San Antonio Chamber.

The Labor Peace Agreement would “require that all solicitation documents and contracts for terminal concessions at SAT include a requirement to implement a labor peace agreement between the concessionaire, its affiliates and its subtenants, if any, and any requesting labor organizations which represent or reasonably might represent employees working as part of the prime concession agreement….”

Under these agreements, a private sector employer must secure an LPA with a union as a condition of doing business with the city.

The North San Antonio Chamber assembled an influential coalition comprised of San Antonio business owners and area pro-business advocacy groups to urge City Council and Mayor Nirenberg to remove the LPA portion of RFP 18-014.

The coalition is led by the North San Antonio Chamber and includes the San Antonio Restaurant Association, Associated Builders and Contractors – South Texas Chapter, San Antonio Chapter of Associated General Contractors, San Antonio Manufacturers Association, San Antonio Real Estate Council, and the San Antonio Tourism Council, among others.

Children’s Hospital of San Antonio expands pediatric network in North-Central San Antonio

CHRISTUSHealthSystemThe Children’s Hospital of San Antonio is expanding its Pediatric Network in North-Central San Antonio, providing more access to care for children and families with the opening of its new pediatric clinic at Alon Town Centre.

“The Children’s Hospital of San Antonio has recruited world-class pediatricians with longstanding involvement in the community whose number one goal is to provide the best in pediatric health care,” said Elias J. Neujahr, President of the Children’s Hospital of San Antonio.  “Our pediatricians are the foundation of our children’s health from birth.  With their expertise, we are able to create an integrated health care system that puts our children first.”

The Children’s Hospital of San Antonio first announced the creation of the Physician Group in May of this year with Tejas Pediatrics, Children First Pediatrics, Northwest Pediatrics, and Dr. Sky Izaddoost leading the charge to develop the network.

“Growing up in San Antonio, I’ve watched our city expand and develop.  As our city grew, so did the need for healthcare, especially for our children,” said Dr. Izaddoost.  “By aligning with the Children’s Hospital of San Antonio, I strive to be part of a network of physicians putting our children first. I am honored and grateful to provide world class, seamless care in our community.  This is an exciting opportunity to improve the health and well-being of our most precious, our children.”

Dr. Izaddoost and Dr. Subhashini Valavalkar will be anchoring a new location at Alon Town Centre.

“The health care landscape is changing – especially pediatric medicine in San Antonio,” said Dr. Subhashini Valavalkar.  “I am very happy to actively participate in this medical evolution in San Antonio and South Texas. I believe our new primary care team, in partnership with physicians at the Children’s Hospital of San Antonio, Baylor College of Medicine, and the private community, is a positive move towards continuing the advancement of providing quality care to all children in San Antonio.”

“The model we have created implements an integrated medical record system, accessible by all physicians in the Children’s Hospital of San Antonio network,” said Elias J. Neujahr, President of Children’s Hospital of San Antonio.  “That network enables pediatricians and pediatric specialists caring for a child to communicate, with real-time updates on the child’s health.  This new location ensures we can continue to provide the best possible medical care for our patients and their families.”

The new Children’s Hospital of San Antonio Physician Group at Alon Town Centre is located at 11503 NW Military Highway, Suite 113, San Antonio, TX 78231 and is scheduled to open November 24, 2014.  The clinic’s hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.  New and existing patients are invited to call 210.705.5151 to make an appointment.

Lower debt, higher wholesale sales allows CPS Energy to delay planned rate increase

cps energy logo

CPS Energy will once again be able to eliminate a rate increase request initially planned to take effect in February 2016.

This is the second time the company has been able to extend the time between rate increase requests, thanks to continued diligent streamlining of our business processes, lower debt costs and increased sales of wholesale electricity.

When CPS Energy came before the community seeking a rate adjustment for 2008, we shared plans which showed the need to seek rate increases every other year for the next decade, to pay for additional growth, environmental compliance and system maintenance.

As our regulator, the San Antonio City Council approved the next planned rate increase, which went into effect in 2010. In 2011, CPS Energy was able to delay our next planned request until 2013. In October of that year, the council approved a 4.25 percent rate adjustment, which went into effect this February.

At that time, we outlined to the council the anticipated need to ask for a 5.25 percent adjustment next year, to take effect in February 2016.

But as in 2012, we now do not need to make that request. Barring unlikely circumstances, we will not need to seek an increase until late 2017, which would go into effect February of 2018.

Several factors allowed for this change. Visit CPS Energy’s blog to read more.
