A portion of the interest earned on that preferred stock is used to fund the Senior Crimestoppers Program at Granada Homes. Broadway Bank and Senior Crimestoppers made the announcement, flanked by McGruff the Crime Dog, local Crimestoppers and the San Antonio Police Department, “Senior Crimestoppers is a way for an administrator to further enhance the lives of the residents they serve. They all work very hard to provide safe, secure, comfortable living environments and their desire to implement the program is just one more example of this. Implementing this program does not mean that the facility currently has a crime problem, but that the administrator is proactively finding a way to keep problems from occurring in the future,” said Terry Rooker, president of Senior Crimestoppers.


Senior Crimestoppers is a coordinated set of components that work together to create a zero-tolerance-to-crime platform in senior housing facilities. This includes personal lockboxes for the residents, cash rewards up to $1,000 paid anonymously for information about wrongdoing of any kind, and effective, on-going education and training for staff members and residents. Senior Crimestoppers has reduced all aspects of crime in participating facilities by 94%.

Morningside Ministries is a Humana Grant Finalist!

MM-Main-logo-300x108The Humana Foundation announced that Morningside Ministries Senior Living Communities has been selected as one of three finalists in its highly Humana green logocompetitive Humana Communities Benefit grant program.  Chosen from among 38 applicants, Morningside will have a chance to win a $350,000 grant in early September that will benefit its web-based program.  The Communities Benefit program provides funds to local, nonprofit organizations that have an impact on healthy behaviors and healthy relationships in the San Antonio area and surrounding communities. at Morningside Ministries is a web-based, distance-learning service that provides education, training and support to those caring for older adults. was founded in 2007 and has been 100% grant funded ever since its inception. The goal of is to improve the quality of life experienced by older adults in care, as well as to help their caregivers cope with the often difficult task of caring for an elderly person.  Family members and others can view over 300 caregiver training videos in “real-time” or “on-demand” on the website for free at any convenient time, 24-7.

With grant funds from Humana Communities Benefit, will significantly expand its outreach and marketing efforts to make many more caregivers throughout the community aware of the availability of resources to allow them to provide better care, reduce stress in their lives and become more knowledgeable of the aging process. The Coaching Workshop is scheduled from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. and Career Fair from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Approximately 20 companies will be present at the Career Fair and looking to hire for various positions.  Full-time and part-time opportunities are available, including some positions requiring bilingual skills (Spanish-English).  Candidates should bring multiple paper copies of their resume with them.

Best of Breast: Cancer experts to converge at 12th Annual Breast Cancer Conference

methodist hcs logoSome of the best experts in the field of breast cancer research will take time out of their hectic schedules to present at the 12th Annual Alamo City Cancer Council’s Breast Cancer Update Conference presented by Methodist Healthcare. This year the community event will be held at a new location – the Oblate School of Theology’s Whitley Center at 285 Oblate Drive on Saturday, September 13th starting at 8 a.m. This ½ day free conference is open to the San Antonio community and brings experts in the field of breast cancer research and treatment together to update the public and healthcare providers on the latest advancements in breast cancer.

The day will begin with a keynote presentation entitled “Immunotherapy and Breast Cancer,” presented by Dr. Skip Burris of Tennessee Oncology. Dr. Burris is a board certified oncologist with more than 20 years of phase 1 clinical trial experience. He received his undergraduate degree from the United States Military Academy and medical degree from the University of South Alabama. After graduating, he completed his residency in hematology/oncology at the San Antonio Military Medical Center (SAMMC).

Seven concurrent sessions will be held throughout the morning, with attendees choosing two to attend. The day will then conclude with a lunchtime presentation on “Surgical Approaches in Breast Reconstruction” presented by Dr. Jessica Belz of PRMA and Dr. Christy Chai of the Oncology Department at SAMMC.

Alamo City Cancer Council Director Sharon Wilks, M.D., F.A.C.P. started the conference in 2003 and states, “the breast cancer update conference serves as a forum to bring a diverse group of attendees together to learn more about the advancements in breast cancer. From the newly diagnosed patient to the seasoned medical professional, there are learning opportunities for everyone at the conference. We are also especially grateful to Methodist Healthcare for their tremendous support as the presenting sponsor of this years event.” The conference is free to the general public and continental breakfast, a box lunch and free parking are included for all attendees.

And with national Breast Cancer Awareness Month right around the corner Alamo City Cancer Council Executive Director Gretchen Garceau-Kragh, says, “the conference is a great way to kick off our participation in the national Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Your North San Antonio Chamber has been hard at work for you as we attended stakeholder meetings for the proposed City of San Antonio Storm Water Fee changes. Over the last several weeks, we reviewed and provided comments on the proposed Storm Water Fee rate and methodology restructuring. While we recognize the need to fund critical drainage programs across the City, we did not agree with the proposed methodology and rates that were proposed to take effect in FY15 and FY16, respectively. We took the issue to the North SA Chamber board, which voted at the July board meeting to oppose the fee changes. After an advocacy campaign that included a letter to City staff and elected officials, an email alert to members, media interviews and social media posts, we were pleased to learn from Mayor Ivy R. Taylor at this month’s sold-out Mayor’s Vision for San Antonio event that she was recommending to the City Manager that the proposed Storm Water Fee changes be “postponed indefinitely.”

We couldn’t be happier with Mayor Taylor’s decision and Manager Sheryl Sculley’s willingness to revisit the Storm Water Fee methodology, while also removing it from the FY15 budget. We will continue to work in partnership with City staff and officials to identify a reasonable methodology and rate structure that will not impede business expansion, retention or recruitment, while still allowing the City to secure the funding it requires for the important drainage infrastructure maintenance and capital improvement projects our districts need.

Advocacy Alert: Support for Constitutional Amendment for Increased Funding for Transportation
A strong transportation infrastructure is fundamental to Texas’ quality of life and economic vitality, attracting new businesses and generating new jobs. According to the latest report of the 2030 Commission, approximately $6.1 billion per year in construction funding is needed to achieve “worst possible” transportation conditions and $9.5 billion per year is need to achieve “minimally competitive” transportation conditions. The current State budget results in a $1.1 billion shortfall in transportation construction funding and that shortfall will increase to $3.5 billion in the next biennium based on current revenue projections.

Thus, the North San Antonio Chamber board of directors supports the proposed constitutional amendment to provide for the transfer of certain general revenue to the economic stabilization and state highway funds, and for the dedication of the revenue transferred to the state highway fund to be used only for developing public road rolls (not toll roads) and that those dedicated funds be allocated by the Texas Department of Transportation in a manner consistent with existing formulas to ensure that the entire state benefits from this additional funding. The proposed amendment will be on the November 4, 2014 ballot and we encourage you to vote in favor of the amendment that increases funding for transportation. Help to keep Texas moving!

SAMCo_logoIn an effort to keep up with the San Antonio region’s growing congestion and transportation funding challenges, the San Antonio Mobility Coalition would like you to consider voting in favor of Proposition 1. The Texas general election ballot takes place on November 4, 2014.

What is Prop. 1

Proposition 1 would authorize annual disbursements from the State’s oil and gas production tax collections to the State Highway Fund. An estimated $1.4 billion would be transferred into the State Highway Fund in the first year alone, as a first step in addressing a projected $4 billion annual funding shortfall for TxDOT.
