SSFCU wins Desjardins Youth Financial Education Award

Security Services Federal Credit UnionSecurity Service FCU (SSFCU) has received the Cornerstone Credit Union League Desjardins Youth Financial Education Award for credit unions with more than $500 million in assets category for its work with Family Services Association in improving the financial literacy of hundreds of teens and their parents.

With funding from the city of San Antonio, Family Services Association offers a six-week, paid summer internship program for youth ages 14 to 16 years. As part of the program, the teens receive leadership development training and money management education. This year, SSFCU provided four financial education presentations for the 200 plus students and their parents, covering a range of subjects including money basics, using credit wisely, budgeting and taxes. As part of their internship, all the students were required to open a savings account and save at least 10 percent of their earnings. SSFCU provided free savings and checking accounts to those who did not already have accounts set up.

“Helping young people secure jobs and financial skills is key to their future success,” says Letha Harrelson, SSFCU’s business development manager. “And when they succeed, the entire community succeeds.”

Randolph-Brooks Federal Credit Union awarded 2013 Access Award

RBFCU logoRandolph-Brooks Federal Credit Union was recently awarded the 2013 Access Award from the Austin Mayor’s Committee for People with Disabilities for its Domain branch in Austin, Texas.

This award is given annually to businesses and organizations that not only meet the accessibility requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), but go above and beyond when providing goods and services to people with disabilities.

The RBFCU branch in Domain is considered to have superior accessibility, specifically because of some key features. The branch is equipped with accessible parking spaces, ramps, restrooms and doors. And, beyond that, the Domain branch offers lower teller stations, sizeable office spaces and lower check writing stations to be completely wheelchair-accessible.

RBFCU pic“At RBFCU, our mission is to improve our members’ economic well-being and overall quality of life. That includes making our financial institution accessible to members, so they can use our resources and facilities to save time, save money and earn money,” said Mark Matthews, Assistant Vice President of Business Development and Community Relations in Austin. “We’re honored by this recognition from the Mayor’s Committee for People with Disabilities, because it means we’re doing our job, taking care of our members and serving their needs.”

Security Service Federal Credit Union ranks fifth nationally in overall dealer satisfaction

Security Services Federal Credit UnionDealer service, fast payment and an increased presence in Colorado and Utah has placed Security Service Federal Credit Union (SSFCU) fifth among prime retail credit lenders in the country for overall satisfaction, according to the J.D. Power 2013 U.S. Dealer Financing Satisfaction Study(SM) released in July.

Goss-016-F-5x7SSFCU scored 917 on a 1,000-point scale based on its finance offerings, the application/approval process and sales representative relationship.  “We are delighted to receive this ranking from the dealers,” said Charles Goss, senior vice president and chief lending officer. “We have approached our work with dealers as a partnership, and we’re very passionate about the service we provide them. These relationships drive the way we do business.”

Moving to an entirely paperless process, SSFCU can approve a loan in as little as 15 to 30 minutes, with funding delivered to the dealership within 24 hours in all the credit union’s regional markets.

An equally important byproduct is the environmental impact of SSFCU’s high touch tech. At any given time, the credit union is saving about 30 tons of paper – saving enough energy to power 30 average American homes for six months and enough water to fill 210,000 one-gallon bottles. In addition to its ranking in the J.D. Power study, SSFCU recently passed the $5 billion mark in indirect auto loans. “According to the most recent reports, SSFCU funds one out of every four cars within the San Antonio area,” said Danny Lane, vice president, indirect lending. “We see our business growing steadily since our expansion into Colorado and Utah.”

The 2013 U.S. Dealer Financing Satisfaction Study was based on responses from 3,962 dealers who were surveyed between March and April 2013.

Getting kids through college takes money smarts

Security Services Federal Credit UnionIn May, Security Service Federal Credit Union took its collegiate financial readiness course to the bilingual playing field, presenting at the UTSA Parent College and Career Readiness Academy at Café College.

It’s just one more collaborative in a series designed to address the challenges uncovered by the push for increased college enrollment. A movement, if you will, towards a focus not just on recruitment and admissions, but on the creation of a culture focused on degree completion.

All the work, says Letha Harrelson, business development manager in charge of youth education at SSFCU, is to help give teens a financial reality check and teach them how to make “smart, personal financial decisions when they enter into the independence of college life.”

Here’s the deal: it takes far more than academic preparedness to succeed at college. Kids have to be ready to take on the social and personal challenges, as well. And they have to be financially prepared if they are going to have a chance for a brighter, better future in college and beyond.

We know that college is critical: by 2018, 63 percent of all jobs in the US will require a postsecondary education, according to the Georgetown University Center on Education and the Workforce. Yet, while enrollment is at an historic high, almost half of the students who begin college at a two- or four-year institution fail to earn a degree within six years, according to a report by the National Commission on Higher Education Attainment released earlier this year.

And the outlook after college isn’t so grand either with kids graduating strapped in debt, holding degrees that don’t match up to available jobs.

SSFCU takes this very personally. And, through its innovative financial literacy program is working to stem the tide of non-graduation with a three-pronged approach:

  1. Presenting an option where students can find internships and jobs before jumping straight into college…perhaps even pursue a college degree through tuition reimbursement at the hiring company. Not everyone is prepared to go right off to higher education after graduating high school.
  2. Collaborating on financial literacy: working with and through organizations that reach students with financial education specific to understanding the costs involved in college and options for funding that will help prevent extensive debt.
  3. Reaching parents to boost success: For some families, this generation of students will be the first to pursue higher education. For others, the financial landscape is confusing and seems out-of-reach, making them much less able to help navigate their kids through the financial aid process.

SSFCU Rolls Out New Online Banking Platform

Security Services Federal Credit UnionAs the next step in the further evolution of its digital services portfolio, Security Service Federal Credit Union has unveiled myBranch, a completely redesigned online banking platform (formerly known as CompuBranch), to its nearly 190,000 online members. The inaugural release of the platform comes on the heels of  the launch of myBranch Mobile, the credit union’s mobile banking solution.

The overhaul, which has been in development for over a year , represents a distinct step-up with a new design, the ability to pay loans and transfer funds from other institutions, pre-filled deposit account applications and download options in the latest formats for common personal financial management software programs, like Quicken and Quick Books.

It’s a long step from 1996 when SSFCU leapt into the online arena with one of the first interactive banking websites that featured “handy little calculators” called wizbots, up-to-date rates and online loan applications.  “myBranch is our new digital banking convergence platform that will provide members with the same level of self-service no matter what device they choose to use,” says Mike Chapman, Security Service executive vice president and chief operating officer.

myBranch is designed to provide the best online banking experience for desktop and laptop users, while myBranch Mobile, available in iPhone, Android and mobile browser versions and accessible at m.ssfcu.org, aims at the users of  smartphones . The credit union plans to roll out additional myBranch functionality in the coming months.
