The Building Owners and Managers Association (BOMA) International is a federation of 93 BOMA U.S. associations, BOMA Canada and its 11 regional associations and 13 BOMA international affiliates. Founded in 1907, BOMA represents the owners and managers of all commercial property types including nearly 10 billion square feet of U.S. office space that supports 3.7 million jobs and contributes $205 billion to the U.S. GDP. Its mission is to advance the interests of the entire commercial real estate industry through advocacy, education, research, standards and information.

BOMA International is a primary source of information on building management and operations, development, leasing, building operating costs, energy consumption patterns, local and national building codes, legislation, occupancy statistics, technological developments and other industry trends. BOMA International continues to be a major force as the only national commercial real estate trade organization with an aggressive codes and standards advocacy program.  BOMA’s advocacy team is involved in codes and standards development from the moment they’re created; not after they’re released. This includes: The International Codes; Accessibility Codes and Standards; Codes and Standards; Luminous Egress and Federalization of Building Codes. BOMI International was founded in 1970 as a not-for-profit, independent educational institute to fulfill the need for a higher level of training and expertise in the property and facility management profession. BOMI offers a professional designation program with nationally recognized designations of Real Property Administrator (RPA®), Facilities Management Administrator (FMA®) and Systems Maintenance Administrator (SMA®).  The RPA® designee will learn all aspects of operating a commercial building and maximizing a building’s net income while minimizing risk.  Courses include design, operation and maintenance of an office building, budgeting and accounting for commercial real estate, risk management and best practices in bidding.  There are additional electives in marketing and leasing and the operation of the asset from an owner’s perspective through asset management.  The FMA® designee will know how to make a facility run smoothly by creating a safe and productive workplace and taking care of tenant issues such as comfort, safety, daily operations and maintenance.  The programs include planning and project management, environmental health and worker safety.  The SMA® designee will have the tools to improve operations, create energy efficiencies, reduce costs and enhance the value of an asset.  For additional information, please visit the BOMI website at www.bomi.org. Locally, BOMA San Antonio offers the BOMI designation courses, BOMA International webinars and seminars on current issues.
