VoteSSFCUNobody will ever deprive the American people of the right to vote except the American people themselves and the only way they could do this is by not voting. ~ Franklin D. Roosevelt

And yes. Your one vote really does count.

1714: One vote placed King George 1 on the throne in England and restored the monarchy.

1820: One electoral college vote by John Quincy Adams kept President James Monroe from being elected president without dispute when he ran for a second term. Adams stated he did so “to make certain that only George Washington would ever have the honor of being elected President by a unanimous vote.”

1845: One vote made Texas the 28th state.

1876: One vote gave Rutherford B. Hayes the presidency of the United States.

1920: Tennessee ratified the 19th amendment, which allowed women to vote, by one vote. Tennessee was the last state needed for ratification.

1960: One vote per voting precinct would have elected Richard Nixon rather than John F. Kennedy president.

2000: The deciding factor in this November 7 election – the closest presidential race in history – was a victory in Florida by just 537 votes.

So while newer statistics show that one vote has, on average, a 1 in 60 million chance of making the deciding difference, it’s still better odds than winning the lottery. Several presidential elections have been so close that just a barroom full of people voting would have made the difference.

Numbers aside, voting is the very foundation of our democracy and the hallmark of our freedom. Got questions about voting? Visit the Texas election office online at Votetexas.gov.
