UPDATE!
San Antonio Safe & Sick Leave Ordinance

Today, March 4, the 408th Judicial District Court, Bexar County, ORDERED the appeal ABATED until the Supreme Court of Texas either denies the petition for review or issues its opinion in City of Austin, Texas, et al. v. Texas Association of Business, et al., or until further order of the court.

Brief History: On Nov. 22, Judge Peter Sakai of the 225th District Court granted a Temporary Injunction, halting the City of San Antonio’s Sick and Safe Leave Ordinance which was to go into effect on December 1, 2019.

The trial on the merits was held on, Dec 11 and Judge Sakai upheld the temporary injunction order, thereby staying the Safe & Sick Leave Ordinance from going into effect until after a trial date set for September 2020. The City and others appealed this decision on January 2.

We will continue to keep members informed of any updates through this newsletter.

Coronavirus, COVID-19 Virus Facts

We are aware that the March 2nd City and County's Declaration of Public Health Emergency has resulted in travelers reconsidering their upcoming Spring Break travel to San Antonio. While we hope folks will conduct their own research before altering their plans, we know this is rarely the case.
We are providing you with facts as shared with us from Visit San Antonio with the hope that should you and your staff have the opportunity to speak with guests you can help in reassuring them that our City is a safe destination and open for business.

  • In total, 235 people were quarantined in two separate groups that arrived at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland. Ninety of the first 91 that arrived were released from quarantine on Thursday, Feb. 20, and have gone home. Another more than 120 are being released on Tuesday, March 3.
  • Eleven of those travelers tested positive for the coronavirus and are now being treated at the Texas Center for Infectious Diseases on the south side of San Antonio. Several others remain in quarantine, under observation.
  • When the remaining evacuees leave this week, there will be no more remaining at Lackland. Officials indicate they don’t expect any more evacuees in San Antonio.
  • Officials with Metro Health, the CDC, the military and county stress that the risk to residents and visitors remains very low.
  • No members of the general public have tested positive for the coronavirus.
  • At this time, NO domestic travel restrictions are in place.

The North San Antonio Chamber continues to watch closely emerging information and are thankful for our partnerships with Visit San Antonio, the City of San Antonio, and Bexar County in keeping us informed.
