If
you see these names and your eyes begin to twitch because you don’t
quite know if you want to partake in the internet social scene, then
you’re going to miss the boat! Not only will you miss it, it’s
almost passing by you as we speak. Luckily, your Leadership Lab experience
has prepared you enough to want to take on that social task of putting on
that name tag and going out to shake some hands…so come
on…let’s put on our digital name tag and start shaking hands
with our friends online!
We
have created a few places you can join people from your own class as well
as meet new and old members alike. The alumni association has created a
Facebook group as well as a LinkedIn page where you can mingle with your
friends from lab and meet some of the other members of lab you wish you
could have met the first go round! And they’re just a click away!
On
your left, you will see the icons for what we have created for you to
Facebook, LinkedIn, and our chapter web page hosted by the North Chamber of
Commerce. Want more information, read more below…

ELEVATOR
SPEECH
We've all been in a position where
we had a couple of seconds - like 30 - to answer that all-important
question - "What do you do?" What do you say?
Here are the 5 critical steps to
developing your personal brand elevator pitch.
- Identify what's really unique about what you do. The whole
idea behind a great elevator pitch is to intrigue someone. It's an
ice-breaker and a marketing pitch for yourself, your products or your
services - all rolled into one. Your elevator pitch must have a hook.
"I own a flower shop downtown" doesn't hold a candle to
"I'm a florist with rare, South American tropical flowers that
bloom in the winter."
- Make it really exciting or at least catchy. When your
elevator pitch increases your heart rate you know it has struck your
passion chord. It speaks to who you really are and what excites you
about what you do. It has integrity. What is it about your business
that really gets your heart racing? Incorporate that and you'll have
found your personal brand.
- Remember KISS: A good elevator pitch
doesn't try and be all things to all people. A good rule of thumb is
Keep It Simple and Short (actually that's Keep It Simple Stupid, but
Short is nicer). Rather, it conveys a clear idea in a few seconds. It
might be a few sentences, but no more than a paragraph or so. Keep it
under 30 seconds. In fact, think Twitter and 140 characters.
- Write it out. Take a stab at it. Write
down your personal brand. Say it out loud. Tweak it. Then re-write it
again. Call a friend or two, and give it a try. Then rewrite it again.
Rarely do you get the right words the first time. Take out every word
you don't need or that doesn't mean something to you.
- Rehearse, rehearse, refine, rehearse. The first
few times you try out your elevator pitch may be a bit uncomfortable,
but it gets easier. After a while, it will become second nature to
you, and when it does, you will be glad you practiced.

Greetings Leadership Lab Alumni~
With 6 short months of our board term under our
belt, the Alumni Association Board of Directors is happy to have already offered
so many quality events to our membership this year.
Among them are:
- Our first networking event in February at County
Line to kick off rodeo season in San Antonio
- Our first family event, Rampage Suite Night at
AT&T Center in April
- Our first educational events on Social Media in
late April
- Our Going Green in the Workplace & At Home
educational event in early June
Additionally, we have partnered with the North
Chamber to promote their events at a discounted rate to the Alumni
Association including the Mayor’s Vision for San Antonio and the
Athena Young Professionals Award Luncheon. Later this year, we will also be
promoting the State of the County Address, Business After 5, and the annual
North Chamber Gala, which will be held at the JW Marriott Hill Country
Resort.
In additional to promoting these North Chamber
events, the Alumni Association Board also plans to offer 3 more networking
events, 2 additional educational events and will be partnering with the
Paseo del Rio Association for their first River Walk
Lucky Duck Race & Festival, which will include an afternoon
of fun for the entire family while raising awareness and needed funds for
the Haven for Hope homeless resources campus that opened earlier this year.
We hope you are finding our new format for the
quarterly Alumni Association newsletter easier to navigate with information
that is relevant to your ongoing personal and professional development. The
Communications & Public Relations Committee is also working to expand
our social media presence to the entire Alumni Association on both LinkedIn
and Facebook in the coming months and more information will be communicated
as these resources are further developed.
Lastly, the Membership & Awareness
Committee is publishing our Mid-Year Membership Survey to obtain your
feedback regarding the events and resources we have offered this year. Our
goal is to offer events and technological tools that are relevant and
useful to you and we welcome your feedback.
As you can see, the Alumni Association has been
hard at work! I’d like to take a moment to thank those who have paid
their membership dues, as well as those whose companies have sponsored our
events. Without your support,
we would not be able to offer so many top-notch and diverse programs this
year.
The year may be half over, but it’s not
too late to pay your membership dues. We still have many events planned for
the remainder of the year. If you have not already done so, please contact
Marilyn White at 210.344.4848 to pay your dues today!
Thank you for your ongoing involvement in the
Leadership Lab Alumni Association. I hope to see you at one of our events
in the near future!

A
look ahead
A few words from our Leadership Lab Chair
|
|
|
As we head into
July, it’s hard to believe that we are at the half way mark of our 2010
Leadership Lab journey. I would like to share what we have learned at our
sessions , but before I can do that I want to thank our planning session
leaders who freely gave of their time and expertise to ensure the success
of each session. And give special thanks to our venue and financial
sponsors, University of the Incarnate Word, SAWS, H-E-B, Morgan’s
Wonderland and Baptist Health System, for making our learning environments
fun, welcoming and memorable.
Our
April session was sponsored by the University of the Incarnate Word. Dr.
Glenn James, Dean of Science and Engineering, began the day with teaching
us the importance of using stories and the impact it has on your audience.
Our day consisted of social media etiquette for communication in the 21st century,
the keys to preparing and presenting powerful and effective presentations
and team commitment to responsibility.
San
Antonio Water System (SAWS) and H-E-B sponsored the Navigating Change
session in May. We learned that change happens whether or not we are ready,
and change management is the key to accepting and preparing for change and
the emotions that are connected with change. Mr. Gavin Gallagher, CIO for
H-E-B, gave a stellar presentation on the J-Curve and shared his personal
view on change and the importance it has on an organization. Skeeter
Lieberum presented on key alignment challenges when change is implemented
within an organization and facilitated a great case study that emphasized
technology, processes and procedures, performance system and the action
plan. To wrap up the day, SAWS shared with the Lab the infrastructure and
technology changes that their company is currently undertaking and the
stages of changes that they encountered. The 2010 Leadership Lab class was
the first to experience community service first hand by visiting the
Morgan’s Wonderland park.
The
message was loud and clear that leaders do give back and make a difference
in their community. The class enjoyed a tour of the facilities and heard
presentations from the park staff first hand, such as where they came from,
why they chose to do what they do, giving back for purpose and being the
first place to make it possible for people of all abilities to play, learn
and share life-changing experiences together. Mr. Ed Sakiewicz, Director of
STAR Soccer Complex shared his story of his first experience with the
Special Olympics and how one chance meeting 25 years later turned into
sharing a dream and creating a vision.
This
year’s Lab class continues to bring passion, knowledge, experience
and the ability to have fun to each session, and I thank them all for being
outstanding leaders in our great city.
On
a personal note, I would like to thank Dr. James Parlett of University of
the Incarnate Word for his leadership, friendship and humor. Unfortunately,
we missed Dr. Parlett at our session in April. He passed away on June 9th
after a short battle with lung cancer. Please keep Dr. Parlett’s
family in your thoughts. You will be missed my dear friend.

What does Leadership
Mean to You?
|
|
What
Leadership Means to Me…
By:
Annie Turner, Vice President and
Business Banking Manager at Wells Fargo Bank and the Leadership & Professional Development
Council Chair for the North Chamber Board of Directors
I
believe everyone can be a leader — leadership is not the exclusive
domain of someone with “manager” in his/her title. Leadership
is the “act” of establishing, sharing and communicating
a vision AND the “art” of motivating others to
understand and embrace that vision.
Leaders
connect with a vision. They share their passion and their discipline about
how to make that vision come alive. Only when a team member understands how
much the leader cares does the team member then permit the leader to lead.
Success has as much to do with attitude as aptitude—what’s in
our hearts, not just our heads. Leaders learn from each other. Leaders
share ideas, give ideas and search for the best ideas. They don’t
resist a good idea simply because “it wasn’t invented
here.”
The
best leaders are the best coaches. They don’t rely on authority
or force of personality. They believe in the inherent knowledge and talent
of every member of their team.
Leaders are accountable. They share the credit and shoulder the
blame. They give others the responsibility and opportunity for success. A good leader inspires a team to have
confidence in her or him; a great leader inspires a team to
have confidence in themselves.

Newsletter
and Communications Feedback Wanted
The Communications/Public
Relations Committee of YOUR Leadership Lab Alumni Association wants to
hear your thoughts about the new newsletter format and enhanced
communications you have seen in 2010. We have tried
to streamline our communications via e-mail and the quarterly newsletter.
Shortly the Membership and Awareness Committee will be sending a brief
online survey seeking your feedback regarding your input and
satisfaction with being a part of the Alumni Association. There
will be a few questions directed toward the newsletter format and the
Association's overall communications strategy. Please take time
to answer these questions with your honest feedback so that we may
better communicate with you what opportunities you have to stay
connected with other Lab Alumni.
The Leadership Lab Alumni Board
exists to server you, our members. We thank you for your
participation. If you have any issues/concerns/opinions and want to let
us know directly, please feel free to email us at SALeadershipLab@gmail.com.
Thank you,
Spencer Brown

Facebook, Twitter,
LinkedIn…(cont.)
The
Facebook group was created
to be a place where (if you are a member of Facebook) you can find your
friends from past lab classes, meet other class members and start
sharing ideas about networking, business opportunities, news, etc with
them in an open online forum. If you are familiar with Facebook, this
is just another group. If you are not familiar with Facebook and want
to be, it’s easy to get started. My suggestion would be to
utilize a very simple tool called YouTube. Yes, YouTube is more than
goofy videos of someone falling off a roof. They actually have
instructional videos online that can guide a new user through the
creation of their very own Facebook profile, how to chat, what others
can see, etc. All you have to do is simply type in your question and
several videos will appear with someone to guide you through this
process. Aside from that, you might have to ask your cubicle mate
because I’m sure they’re on there too! (click on the
“f” button, that’s the Leadership Lab Facebook page)
Here’s an example of how Facebook has benefited me
recently. I am part of several groups (whether it be professional
associations or car clubs) and most of them have a Facebook group. I
was sitting at my computer one day and noticed that one of my friends
posted that they are getting ready for the upcoming luncheon (that was
an hour away) that I happened to forget to put into my outlook
calendar! Facebook helped me remember a very important networking
function. If you’re in the business of making sure your name is
out there, and you’re making sure you stay on top of the
industry, you can’t miss these!
The
LinkedIn page was created to
give people a place to go to find out what other professionals are
doing these days. LinkedIn is geared to the “professional”
rather than just anybody like Facebook. You can see others from your
class as well as other classes and see who’s been promoted,
who’s changed companies, and if you’re like me and need to
find a friend who happens to have a landscaping business that happens
to have the common connection of Leadership Lab, then you’re in
the right place! Again, if you’re not familiar with how to create
a LinkedIn profile, YouTube can be a great resource for you to get
started.
Here’s an example of how LinkedIn has helped me
recently. I have a smart phone that lets me receive notifications from
my social accounts and LinkedIn is one of them. I was getting ready for
a lunch meeting with colleagues from my Leadership Lab class and
remembered seeing a notification the day before about one of my lunch
group; they had just updated their profile with news of a promotion.
When we arrived at the restaurant, the first thing I did was
congratulate my friend on his promotion! It’s always nice to start
off the conversation on a good note!
Alright…I’ve given you enough to start you on
your way to becoming a social butterfly online, now go out and start
shaking hands digitally! See you out there! Also…if you want to
hear more and missed the Facebook, Twitter, Apps educational seminar in
April, here’s a link to the video of that session (on YouTube of
course)!
