Tip of the Day:
Business cards. You need them, yet you run out every once in a
while. Well:there just isn't an excuse for this. You never know when that
card really needs to be in someone's hand!
Take the box of cards sitting in your drawer home with you
today. Take about 10-12 cards, place them in the glove box of your car;
your spouses' car glove box; place some in your jacket pockets; briefcase;
guys, put some in every inside coat pocket of your blazers; ladies, place
some in every purse. Put them everywhere you might think would be useful to
you. I have some in my camera bag, portfolio I carry to meetings, and my
business card case (don't forget to fill that one either).
I was recently at a house party of a friend (one where you're
100% sure nobody will need your card) and I didn't have any cards on my
person when someone asked if they could have one to continue a work related
conversation:I franticly looked in every pocket I had, but no luck. Being
told this tip a couple years ago, I happened to check my car's glove box.
Of course I had some there; but unfortunately, my car wipes had leaked all
over them. Alas, my camera bag was in the trunk. I was saved due to my
diligence of placing cards wherever I can. Believe me:this tip came in
handy!
Enjoy,
Alan

MEMBERSHIP HAS ITS ADVANTAGES!
YOUR Leadership Lab Alumni Board has
been working hard scheduling several events for this year! In 2010 we plan
to offer the most events EVER! Thank you for your support and for paying
your dues. Because of the success in collecting dues early for 2010, we can
plan events early (and often) for this year!
The Board held 2
phone-a-thons (one in February and one in March). This is the second year
we've held a phone-a-thon. We wanted to personally thank all of you who
have paid your dues, and to remind those of you who have not had the
opportunity to pay. The phone-a-thons were a great success, and the Board
members who participated really enjoyed having an opportunity to speak to
many of you, get your ideas for events, and just to THANK YOU for
supporting YOUR Leadership Lab Alumni Association.

Education
Events to Come!
|
We have
an exciting year planned for providing education sessions for YOU. We
plan to have four 2-3 hours sessions covering various hot topics.
Our 1st
session will include a fascinating topic we are hearing so much about these
days, "Social Media in Business." We have two wonderful speakers from media
related businesses that will share how we can use social media like Facebook,
Twitter and more to help grow our business and provide better services to our
clients. So join us for breakfast and to learn more on Tuesday, April 27th
from 8am - 10am at Morningside Ministries Auditorium on Babcock/St.
Cloud. This is a free event to Lab Alumni.
Our 2nd
session is already in the works and will be held Tuesday, June 8th
from 8am - 11am at the CPS Energy - Energy & Management Training
Center. We will have
speakers from CPS Energy, SAWS and a LEED AP from Sustainable Perspectives
Group to help us "go green in our businesses and our homes."
Our 3rd
session will be "How To's of Networking" held Thursday, September 23rd,
followed by a chance to practice at the Business After Five happy hour mixer.
Our last
session of the year is scheduled for the month of October and will cover
"Mentoring and Leadership."
Stay
tuned to your emails for more information on all of these exciting education
sessions. We look forward to seeing you there.
Sincerely
Cari Takao

I originally applied to participate in Leadership Lab to
help broaden my leadership skills, build relationships for future
employment opportunities, and begin giving back to my community. Little did
I know that it would become a life altering experience, as I now enter my 3rd
year with the North Chamber and the Leadership Lab Program.
For me, taking part in Leadership Lab was just the beginning.
As I learned more about myself, I also got to know my fellow classmates.
Many of them I consider to be my friends, some have become business
clients, and all are valuable resources for information and guidance. Those
opportunities have continued and expanded as our class became part of the
400+ members in the Leadership Lab Alumni Association.
This ongoing experience played a defining role in starting my
own business earlier this year. It expanded my self-awareness and knowledge
of the business world, strengthened my confidence as a leader, and provided
continued networking opportunities to meet new people who have at least one
thing in common:Leadership Lab. As I've gotten to know the members of the
Alumni Association better, there is so much more that we share than our Lab
experience.
With this in mind, the Alumni Association Board of Directors
has an exciting year planned for everyone to help further your personal and
professional development goals in 2010. We will be hosting 4 networking
events, 2 family events, 4 educational events, and 2 community service
projects throughout the year. In addition to redesigning the quarterly
newsletter, we will also offer other networking resources to help you stay
connected outside of our events.
Our goal is to offer events and technological tools that are
relevant and useful to you, and we welcome your feedback. By now, each of
you has been contacted by your Alumni Ambassador or another representative
of the Alumni Board of Directors. If there is anything that we can do to
make your continued involvement in the Alumni Association more rewarding,
please feel free to contact me, your Alumni Ambassador or any member of the
Alumni Association Board of Directors.
Thank you in advance for your continued participation in the
Leadership Lab Alumni Association. I wish you great success in your
endeavors this year!

A look ahead
A
few words from our Leadership Lab Chair
|
|
As we start our 12th North Chamber Leadership Lab I would
like to thank all those that developed, designed and paved the way for such
a successful and state-of-the-art program.
The Lab continues to be a success and allows for new experiences
thanks to our generous financial sponsors, site sponsors and speakers. They are true visionaries and understand
that development of our leaders only strengthens our community.
I have to thank Jamie Suriano,
Program Manager at H-E-B, who agreed to be the Co-Chair for the Lab this
year. Jamie is my fellow lab rat
from the 2007 Lab and has great passion and commitment to the Lab. Jamie has been instrumental in preparing
for another year of new experiences and opportunities of growth for the
2010 Lab. THANK YOU JAMIE!
We kick started the year with 72
lab participants from 58 companies in our community and some great new
sponsors. Retreat began with a focus
on understanding behavior profiles and improving self awareness through the
DiSC assessment, facilitated by Cindy Stynchula, Stynchula and Associates
and began a journey through personal values identification and goal
setting, facilitated by Diane Simpson, Home At Last. Trust became immediately important as the
2010 Lab experienced our Ropes Course working as a team to get through a
massive spider web. Teamwork was
essential to completion of the task. When all is said and done Cowboy
Olympics ended with a bang as we handed out our medals to the winners as
they claimed their victory. Go Red.
We would again like to give
thanks to our retreat speakers, volunteers, North Chamber staff and a
special thank you to Security Service Federal Credit Union for their
sponsorship that made the experience extra special.
As we reflect on retreat, it is
a reminder that this is just the beginning of a great year to come. Already, the participants challenged
themselves to meet new people, trust someone they just met, trust
themselves, try new experiences from falling from a ladder to riding a
horse and even singing out loud in front of new friends.
Jamie and I are excited about
getting to know each of you. Retreat
gave us a hint of the development and growth that will occur and we cannot
wait to share the next 8 months with you.
We are committed to keeping you engaged, taking you out of your
comfort zone, and making the 2010 Lab the "BEST LAB EVER."
