A Chamber is Born
Just over 30 years ago, the city's infrastructure was firmly concentrated inside Loop 410 and the downtown area. Commerce, as well as the city's steady flow of transportation, spanned no further than a few miles radius of Loop 410. In 1974, a group of visionary businessmen - including Lloyd Jary, Robert Buck and Jim Dement, anticipated San Antonio's future growth to the north and the highways and roadways needed to accommodate such development.
Regardless of detractors at City Hall and in the business community, Jary, Buck and Dement remained focused and garnered support from like-minded business people. Systematically a mission statement was crafted; a board of directors elected; and members solicited. Thus, the North San Antonio Chamber of Commerce was born. While many thought their ideas were farfetched at the time, their foresight is astonishing! Expansion into what is now considered the northern corridor is the reality we know today.
A Modern Vision
Now, the landscape of north San Antonio has dramatically taken on a profitable personality of its own featuring upscale shopping malls, tourist attractions, corporate headquarters, small business ventures, a world-renown medical research facility, hospitals, public and private schools, universities, and thousands of new homes and residents.
Having also grown by leaps and bounds, the North Chamber now represents a myriad of large and small businesses; boasts a membership totaling 1,400 - representing more than 145,000 employees citywide; and continues to play a major role in shaping, defining and serving the northern corridor and other quadrants of the city.
